Chambers use Copeland Glacier™ Compliant Scroll® Compressors.
Copeland
Corporation has long been the recognized world leader in scroll
technology for air conditioning applications. This leadership
role continues to expand, as Copeland is now the first U.S. manufacturer
to introduce a scroll compressor line optimized for commercial
refrigeration -- Glacier™ Compliant Scroll®.
With
millions of installations and several scroll-dedicated manufacturing
plants worldwide, Compliant Scroll® has proven to be the
most reliable, most efficient and quietest compressor technology
available today. Copeland's exclusive product design features
both axial and radial compliance, which allows the compressor
to be more tolerant of liquid refrigerant or debris. Compliant
Scroll® compressors perform at higher efficiency levels than
reciprocating compressors, and last longer over time. Copeland's
scroll compressors have 50% fewer moving parts, which increases
reliability and reduces sound levels. They also operate without
suction valves, for added reliability and ease of maintenance. |
How a
Scroll Compressor Works
As the orbiting
element contacts the stationary scroll, gas entering from the
outside of the scroll is sealed by crescent shaped pockets that
are formed. These pockets get smaller as they get closer to the
center, compressing the gas continuously, until it is discharged
through the center of the scroll. |

Copeland's
Compliant Scroll® technology is based on the concept of compliance.
Compliance refers to the method in which the two scroll members
interact to simultaneously achieve high efficiency and durability.
Copeland's unique and patented approach -- achieving both radial
and axial compliance -- provides the following important advantages:
- Continuous
flank contact, maintained by centrifugal force, minimizes gas
leakage and maximizes efficiency.
- Radial compliance
allows the scroll members to separate in the presence of liquid
refrigerant or debris, thereby substantially improving durability
and reliability.
- Axial compliance
allows the scroll to remain in continuous contact in all normal
operating conditions, ensuring minimal leakage without the
use of tip seals.
- Both radial
and axial compliance allow the scroll members to actually "wear
in" rather than wear out.
Copeland's
Compliant Scroll® has unparalleled liquid-handling capability.
In addition, it is designed to start under any system load. Combined,
these characteristics simplify system design and increase system
reliability.
Compliant Scroll®
compressors perform at higher efficiency levels than reciprocating

have 50% fewer moving parts, which increases reliability and
reduces sound levels. They also operate without suction valves,
for added reliability and ease of maintenance.
Copeland's
engineers have developed exclusive manufacturing processes required
to produce the Compliant Scroll® compressor. And, Copeland
has learned how to control the complex part geometries and precise
tolerance requirements that make scroll compressor technology
difficult to manufacture in high volumes at affordable costs.
In designing the Compliant Scroll®, they developed proprietary
computer models which result in optimum scroll geometry. Copeland
engineers have also designed and developed advanced computer-controlled
machinery to manufacture scroll forms cost effectively.
